History Of The Quakers
If people know anything about Quakers it is usually that they don't fight in wars. This is because their faith leads them to seek the godly part of every human being. It is a 'testimony' that has developed in response to the felt leading of God. Instead they will be found all over the world working tirelessly for peace.
We have other 'testimonies' including the one to equality which means that we have had quaker women ministers since our foundation in the 1650s.
Integrity is another valued 'testimony' which led to people entrusting their savings to quakers in the 18th century. These testimonies are not rules but have grown organically over the years to reflect the values that Friends hold dear.
A new testimony to the earth is now evolving which asks Friends to consider carefully how they should respond to the current environmental crisis. Four Friends from Wem Meeting are part of the local Transition Town movement.
